Shop Morris County: a local Food and Drink audience we built

Case study

Shop Morris County is the local guide to events, things to do, restaurants and hidden gems across all 39 Morris County towns. The Hype Hero built and runs it. Here is what we built, what it reaches and what it teaches us about marketing restaurants in North Jersey.

Where did it start?

Shop Morris County started as an Instagram account in 2023. It had an engaged following, but social media alone is rented land. There was no home base to send people to, no email list to reach them directly and nothing concrete to offer local businesses, including restaurants, that wanted to advertise.

The goal was simple: turn followers into readers, readers into subscribers, and that audience into a real local media product.

Why does a local guide matter for restaurants?

Food and drink is one of the things local readers care about most. Running a guide with a full Food and Drink section gives us a weekly look at what North Jersey diners click, save and share: new openings, seasonal menus, specials, outdoor dining and places that feel local.

It also means restaurants we work with can reach a local audience that already exists, through features and ads on the guide and newsletter, on top of their own social media and email.

Local to North Jersey.

We are based in Morris Plains and work with restaurants, cafes, bars and bakeries across Morris County and North Jersey. John has 25 years of experience. The Hype Hero has been in business for 3 years with a team of 5.

One team for the full stack.

Menus, websites, social, SEO and print under one roof, so every piece matches.

What did we build?

  • The website shopmorriscounty.com, a fast, news style site with Guide, Events, Community and Food and Drink sections, trending stories, quick links and ad placements for local businesses.
  • The Facebook engine A daily plan of carousels, articles and community posts that grew the page past 2 million monthly impressions.
  • The weekly newsletter The Morris County Weekly, designed, written and sent every Monday.
  • Seasonal bucket lists Free printable guides with their own landing pages and automated email delivery, so every download is a new subscriber.
  • The Digital Guide A seasonal flipbook guide that gives advertisers a premium, shareable placement.

What are the results?

  • More than 140,000 monthly readers
  • More than 2 million monthly Facebook impressions
  • The Morris County Weekly grew from 641 to more than 3,000 subscribers, sent every Monday
  • Seasonal bucket lists: Summer 2026 (50+ things), Fall 2026 (76 things) and Winter 2027 (62 things)

Every number above comes from our own published case study for Shop Morris County.

What did we learn that applies to restaurants?

  • Own your audience. Followers are rented, but a website and an email list are yours.
  • Give people a reason to sign up. A free, useful download grew the list every week.
  • Post on a plan, not on a whim. A daily plan is what moved Facebook impressions.
  • Local beats generic. Real places, real events and real towns get clicked and shared.
  • Make it easy for businesses to take part. Clear ad placements turned an audience into a product.

These are the same principles we use when we plan marketing for a single restaurant, a cafe or a small group of locations. The scale is smaller, but the order of work is the same: build the home base, post steadily, grow the list and stay local.
